I’ve worked in different parts of the world, built businesses, met some wonderful people, enjoyed successes and experienced my fair share of disappointments.

And, like most of us, I’ve made a few mistakes along the way.

Would I change anything? Probably a few things. But then again, perhaps those experiences have taught me as much as the successes.

When I look back, it’s not always the professional achievements that come to mind. More often, it’s the people I’ve met, the friendships I’ve made, the conversations I’ve enjoyed and the unexpected moments that have stayed with me.

But there is another experience that has had a particularly profound influence on how I see life.

Some years ago, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour and went through what I can only describe as a near-death experience.

Coming face-to-face with your own mortality has a remarkable way of changing your priorities.

Things that once seemed terribly important suddenly become less so. You begin to appreciate the simple pleasures, the people you love and the extraordinary privilege of being here at all.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate.

That experience didn’t make me a different person overnight. But it did change the way I think about life, relationships, success and the time we have.

I’ve become more conscious of living in the present rather than constantly worrying about what tomorrow might bring. More appreciative of the kindness of others, and more determined to extend that same kindness in return.

After all, we rarely know what someone else may be going through.

I’ve also come to believe that success has relatively little to do with titles, status or financial achievement alone. Those things have their place, of course, but they mean considerably less without good health, meaningful relationships and the opportunity to enjoy life.

None of this means I’ve lost my enthusiasm for business, technology or the challenges that have occupied so much of my working life. Quite the opposite. I still enjoy being involved, learning new things, meeting interesting people and helping others achieve their ambitions.

I simply see those things as part of a much bigger picture.

And that’s really where Continuity comes in.

I wanted to create somewhere to share some of the experiences, observations and thoughts I’ve gathered along the way.

Not because I have all the answers. Far from it. The older I get, the more I realise how much there is still to learn.

Some of what I write will draw on my professional life. Other reflections might concern people, relationships, travel, culture or something that caught my attention over a morning coffee.

There may even be the occasional disagreement. I rather enjoy a good discussion, particularly when someone challenges me to think differently.

What connects it all is the belief that our experiences, good and bad, help shape who we become. Every chapter leaves something with us, and every new chapter offers an opportunity to learn, grow and perhaps see things a little differently.

That’s what Continuity means to me.

I hope that something here occasionally makes you think, brings a smile or reminds you of an experience of your own.

And if it starts a conversation, all the better.

Because, when all is said and done, it’s the people we share our lives with, and the moments we create together, that matter most.

A career shaped by experience.
